Legal proceedings can be costly.  The most effective way to control your costs is by reaching agreements with your spouse.  Anything that the two of you are able to agree to on your own will reduce the amount of work that needs to be done by the attorney.  That does not mean that you should sell-out or compromise on those issues that are of real importance to you; but it does mean that you will benefit if you work with your legal team to minimize the time they spend sorting out issues that you and your spouse can easily agree to.

It also helps limit expenses when you can provide documents needed for your case.  Keep in mind that you are billed for all contact you have with your attorney and legal assistant, so have your thoughts and questions organized in advance of meetings and telephone conversations.  Being well prepared, working in conjunction with your legal team, and reaching agreements on as many issues as possible with your spouse will help you to ensure that you have a cost effective case.
