The sun is setting later, rain clouds are clearing the sky, and flowers are blooming. This can only mean one thing–spring has sprung! While springtime often represents changes and renewal, it also brings one of the most exciting times of the year: spring break. Most of us are not likely to be beachside in Cabo with a cocktail in hand, but we are lucky to be in the Evergreen state. Spending your spring break in Washington State can be incredible, especially with kids.
Here are some ways to spend spring break in Washington state:
-
Visit local museums
There are some great, hands-on museums that are right in our backyard! Head over to the Museum of Glass or to the Children’s Museum of Tacoma. Both are renowned for being interactive and highly entertaining. Before you go, check to see if there will be live glassblowing at the Museum of Glass so you and your kids can learn how they make the incredible sculptures that fill the display cases. If you are closer to Seattle, check out the Museum of Pop Culture, MoPOP. Whether you are a connoisseur of classic music or a science fiction fan, you are bound to find an exhibit that will interest you and your kids.
-
Go outdoors
Spring break in Washington state is prime time to go outdoors. Take your children on a hike. Try Watershed Park in Olympia or make the trip out to Mount Rainier Park for some family-friendly trails. Then, go to the beach or the lake for fishing or your favorite aquatic sports. If you want to spend more time in nature, go camping; just prepare to dress warmly for the evenings.
-
Go to a sporting event
Spring is a great time for sports, so why not go to a game? Little League is soon to be in full swing, so go watch your kids play. There are a few Seattle Kraken games left, and the Mariners and Sounders are ramping up for some amazing seasons. Share your love of sports with your kids this spring break—spending time together while rooting for your favorite team is sure to build lasting memories.
-
Go whale watching
As we approach whale watching season, book a tour during spring break. See orcas, humpbacks, minkes, grays, or killer whales in various places throughout the state. Orcas Island in the San Juans is a popular choice, but you can go to Seattle or Port Angeles as well.
-
Be a tourist in your own city or the surrounding area
So many of Washington’s best treasures are found just a short drive, train ride, or walk away. If you or your kids are into cooking or grilling, seek out your local farmers’ market, and buy fresh, seasonal produce. Try something new or whip up your favorite recipes together.
Alternatively, go on a scavenger hunt to find historical sites and monuments in your town. Visit the Spokane Historical website and select one of their curated tours. From learning about Native Americans to locating ghost-sighting spots, you and your family can share some unique experiences together.
